Dirk had a passion for music. He made his passion flesh, shared it with the world. His love of music lives on in us, and the people whose lives were blessed with scenes, sounds and ideas once thought impossible, remote or unlikely--in turn, we have not been selfish with his gift. We pass it on, the love and the music, share and share alike: that is his gift to the world, his undying legacy.
Rock on, Dirk.
This young man embodied the spirit of giving -- not just with music by by allowing us to be part of his journey and his fight. His was a site that I visited not just for the music but to see if there was an update on how Dirk was doing. To the next of kin, thank you for allowing us to be part of that journey and to know him as a friend.
Our prayers are with you (his family). Know that he had more friends than he probably ever knew. J
how very sad.... one of the beautiful things about the internet is how it can bring complete strangers together and make them friends through mutual interests. though never meeting dirk, it feels like losing a longtime friend who always had something passionate to say about one of the many things he loved. in this blogs case the universal connection of music. it's a very stong thing, i believe it stays with us forever....

Although I never corresponded directly with Dirk, I know he touched many of the bloggers and myself with his courageous struggle. I felt it was always a treat to read another note from him, that another healthy day passed, that sharing his knowledge and passion about the music he loved was just as important as any medical treatment. He will be missed. My prayers to his family- see you on the other side, my friend- I'll have a beer in hand.

Dirk passed away leaving not just friends and family there, but an extended family of music lovers around the world. My sympathies.
This wasn't was I was expecting today. I am so saddened for the loss and will miss him greatly. His enthusiasm introduced me to music I would have never heard otherwise and I'm glad he was able to take the time to share so much of himself here. The main reason I kept coming back here was for his stories. I admired his courage, wit and optimism about his disease. His perspective seemed to help me filter what was most important in an otherwise cluttered world.
I am so sorry to hear this news. Like others here I never met or corresponded with Dirk but feel we would have been friends with our love of music. If not for Dirk I would never have been turned on to Japanese rock of the 60s and 70s and I thank him for this! I will keep these files in my hard drive to share in his memory.
In spite of his condition he still cared to give us all his gift of Cities On Flame. More importantly he showed us what a human being should be, living an unselfish and brave life that should inspire the rest of us.
To his family I am sorry for your loss.

Dirk left an amazing body of work that otherwise might never have been heard again. Wat vreselijk om zo jong heen te gaan. Het is een nare gedachte om te denken aan al die prachtige muziek die hij zal moeten missen. Iemand met zo'n smaak verdiende nog vele jaren van genot en geluk. For your thoughts and knowledge about it, but specially, thanks a lot for teach us with your strenght and courage how to be strong, and the most important, how to live optimist and hopeful until the last day. Your work in your blog must stay because your spirit stay here. You will follow talk to us in your posts and comments, as a life lesson. My God, I can't believe it... I really loved this blog, and felt a love for Dirk, too... He turned me on to a lot of music that has really affected my life. His generosity, strength, and love of life should be an example for us all. Take care, Dirk, and be sure to rock it in heaven.
This whole expreience this past year has been so new and unusual. To be so touched by the struggle and saddened by all of the bad news, for someone that many of us have never met nor had any direct contact with, has been a very strong lesson. I wish I knew him, but the feelings still run strong. At times I thought the whole thing might be a trick, to get strangers to write letters- just proof of a general distrust in internet relations.
The company Dirk will keep in the heavens is very good.
We will miss him.

absoutely shellshocked!!! i dont know what to really say at the moment. he brought us all GREAT! music from all over the world. because of his musical taste it opened me up to so many great obscure bands. erkin koray, flower travellin' band, los saicos, kazuki tomokawa, and so many countless others. always so positive and into what he was doing. thanks for the music & thanks for the dedication. rest now in eternal peace.
