Dirk had a passion for music. He made his passion flesh, shared it with the world. His love of music lives on in us, and the people whose lives were blessed with scenes, sounds and ideas once thought impossible, remote or unlikely--in turn, we have not been selfish with his gift. We pass it on, the love and the music, share and share alike: that is his gift to the world, his undying legacy.

Rock on, Dirk.

This young man embodied the spirit of giving -- not just with music by by allowing us to be part of his journey and his fight. His was a site that I visited not just for the music but to see if there was an update on how Dirk was doing. To the next of kin, thank you for allowing us to be part of that journey and to know him as a friend.

Although I never corresponded directly with Dirk, I know he touched many of the bloggers and myself with his courageous struggle. I felt it was always a treat to read another note from him, that another healthy day passed, that sharing his knowledge and passion about the music he loved was just as important as any medical treatment. He will be missed. My prayers to his family- see you on the other side, my friend- I'll have a beer in hand.

Into the misty morning sun.
Nobody asks you where you are going.
Nobody knows where your from.

Now you fly,
through the sky,
never asking why,
and you fly all around,
until somebody shoots you down.

Seagull go on and fly.
Fly to your tomorrow.
Leave me to my sorrow.

Good by Dirk.

This wasn't was I was expecting today. I am so saddened for the loss and will miss him greatly. His enthusiasm introduced me to music I would have never heard otherwise and I'm glad he was able to take the time to share so much of himself here. The main reason I kept coming back here was for his stories. I admired his courage, wit and optimism about his disease. His perspective seemed to help me filter what was most important in an otherwise cluttered world.

I am so sorry to hear this news. Like others here I never met or corresponded with Dirk but feel we would have been friends with our love of music. If not for Dirk I would never have been turned on to Japanese rock of the 60s and 70s and I thank him for this! I will keep these files in my hard drive to share in his memory.
In spite of his condition he still cared to give us all his gift of Cities On Flame. More importantly he showed us what a human being should be, living an unselfish and brave life that should inspire the rest of us.
To his family I am sorry for your loss.
Rest In Peace Dirk!

Like so many others here, I'd like to use this space to thank Dirk for his dedication to sharing his favorite music with us. Cities on Flame was such an incredible site for hard-to-find Japanese folk, rock, and many other forms of music. If I could speak with Dirk, I would want to let him know how sorry I am that things had become so tough for him, but that I'm sure he's now resting in a better place. I can only imagine what his parents are going through right now, and I hope they're coping as well as possible with the tremendous loss of such a young, generous man. Dirk left an amazing body of work that otherwise might never have been heard again. All you bloggers can take a bow for cutting through the red tape that prevents the labels from getting the music to us, but Dirk persevered through an incredibly debilating and, ultimately, fatal illness but, most importantly, kept his spirits up in spite of the hand fate dealt. Amazing! and a true inspiration for we who carry on. Rock on in the next incarnation, brother, and the one after that ... ~stupiddle

I was a very recent "guest" to dirk's blog - it was interesting to discover that his taste in music ran along the same lines as mine...I'd "pop in" to see what was new and, thought that someday he might even post something of mine - and I'd surprise him with some witty comment (or perhaps some new music). In any case, I'll have to wait - he and my younger brother are "up there", listening to EVERYTHING - watching old movies and feeling fine.... God Bless ya' Dirk~

It's been said more eloquently in these posts, but I think it's important to note how many of us will keep Dirk alive with the music he shared with all of us. It's obvious he was an incredibly bright and shiny soul with real passions, and I will miss the resolve he would show in the face of adversity. I really don't want to trivialize this with superlatives, but Dirk was an inspiration to me, much more than some nameless somebody on the internet. Dirk was a fellow rocker. And he hooked me up. Rust in Vrede Uzumaki/Dirk. En veel sterkte en hoop gewenst voor hen die zonder hem verder moeten.

This whole expreience this past year has been so new and unusual. To be so touched by the struggle and saddened by all of the bad news, for someone that many of us have never met nor had any direct contact with, has been a very strong lesson. I wish I knew him, but the feelings still run strong. At times I thought the whole thing might be a trick, to get strangers to write letters- just proof of a general distrust in internet relations.

The company Dirk will keep in the heavens is very good.

We will miss him.
